A dead or dying tree can quickly become a serious safety hazard. Weak branches, internal decay, and unstable roots increase the risk of falling limbs or complete tree failure, especially during storms. In many cases, early warning signs appear before the tree becomes completely dead. Recognizing these signs can help homeowners take action before the tree causes damage or injury. At Canyon Falls Tree Works, we provide expert tree removal in the greater Rapid City area. Here are four common signs that a tree may be dead or dying and should be removed as soon as possible. Large Dead Branches One of the clearest signs of a declining tree is the presence of large dead branches throughout the canopy. Dead limbs often appear dry and completely bare during the growing season. These branches can fall unexpectedly and create major safety hazards for people, vehicles, and nearby structures. A tree with extensive deadwood may be suffering from serious health problems internally. Cracked/Peeling Bark Healthy trees typically have intact bark that protects the inner layers. Large cracks, peeling bark, or sections of missing bark may indicate decay or structural weakness inside the tree. Deep vertical cracks can also weaken the trunk and increase the risk of splitting or collapse. Significant bark damage should always be professionally evaluated. Fungus Growing Near the Base Fungal growth near the trunk or root system often signals internal decay. Fungi feed on dead or rotting wood and may indicate that the tree’s structural integrity is deteriorating below the surface. Root decay can make the tree unstable and more likely to fall suddenly. An arborist can inspect the tree and determine whether removal is necessary. Sparse Leaves or Lack of Growth A tree that produces few leaves, small leaves, or patchy foliage may be struggling to survive. Dead or dying trees often show declining canopy growth and reduced vitality. If large sections of the tree fail to leaf out during the growing season, the tree may no longer be healthy enough to recover. Professional removal can help eliminate safety risks before the condition worsens.
